What do College Coaches Look For?

What do college coaches look for in players while they are recruiting them in high school?

Rob Bishop (South Dakota State University Head Coach)

"We are looking for guys with a high motor that love to play the game. From a skill perspective, speed and arm strength are two tools that will add value on day 1."

Steve Gust (University of Minnesota Crookston Head Coach)

"At Minnesota Crookston, we obviously look for tools such as speed, power, velocity, and talent. What sets us apart is that we also look for hard-working, gritty, and tough players."

Dean Berry (Northern State University Head Coach)

"We are looking for talented baseball players, but more importantly we are looking for hard workers, good students, and great teammates. We also look for the players that play the game the right way. The guys that respect the game. The guys that put the game and their teammates above their own personal stats."

Mitch McIntyre (Iowa Western Community College Pitching Coach)

"We are looking for pitchers who are projectable who are already performing at a high level in High School Games. For hitters, its about finding guys who have tools that separate them from their peers."

Alumni Perspective

1. How has West Fargo Baseball prepared you for college baseball?
2. What is some advice you would tell current West Fargo Baseball players?

Tristen Roehrich- (North Dakota State University Alumni/  FM Redhawks RHP)
1. "West Fargo Baseball was the foundation of my baseball career. They taught me discipline, accountability, and what it takes to succeed. All of these things prepared me for baseball at the next level."
2. "Never take the time playing the game for granted. When I was in college I'd look back on high school and legion days and wish I could go back. Another thing is to never give up because anything is possible."

Ryan Bourassa- (South Dakota State University Alumni/ Atlanta Braves Organization)
1. "West Fargo Baseball helped me develop a routine within the game that helped me prepare for college baseball."
2. "Live in the present. Do not get to high or to low. If you can accomplish those two things you will find success in your baseball career. Everyone has a different journey you just have to find what works best for you."

Brennan Haman- (Des Moines Area Community College)
1. "West Fargo Baseball has prepared me for college baseball in many ways, but the main one is that it taught me to always compete, whether that is in a practice or a game."
2. "Advice that I would give is to not take anything for granted because time flies."
