General Travel Tryout Information
Here are some generic notes about the Travel Try out process:
Travel Tryouts are for ages 9-14U.
Age 15U will tryout with the Legion team. The legion teams will be selected through that tryout process.
The Travel Team Tryouts are being held on March 16th.
WF Baseball may need to cut players to obtain the proper roster size and competitive balance. Players who try out for Travel Baseball and are cut, will have the opportunity to play on an advanced RRVL team for their respective age division.
Each player will be evaluated in the following areas during the tryout process:
- Speed - timing of run
- Fielding both ground balls and fly balls - mechanics, accuracy on throws, velocity of throws, footwork
- Pitching - mechanics, accuracy and velocity
- Hitting - mechanics, power and contact
- Character - This includes attitude, effort, focus and body language in and outside the tryout.
Travel tryouts are required for whoever wants to try out for a travel team, unless there is communication to WF Baseball ahead of the try out. If a player has a conflict, parents must notify WF Baseball of that age group. WF Baseball will try to accommodate the conflict, however we cannot guarantee another try out date.
Players will check in on the day of try outs and will receive an assigned try out number. This number will be used for our grading process. Grades are based on a plyer baseball mechanics, performance and athleticism in a series of drills that include infield, outfield, hitting drills and pitching. Additionally, players will be evaluated on the player's communication, attitude, preparedness, and effort.
Grading players during try-outs is not a perfect science. Tryout grades are only a reflection of a player’s abilities on a that day. Players will be selected for Travel teams based upon tryout grades, team composition considerations, previously displayed commitment levels and prior season evaluations. Please keep in mind that the evaluators are doing their best to evaluate players on their current skills. As parents we may tend to evaluate our own son’s skills at a higher level than may be appropriate. Playing at the wrong level, particularly playing too high a level, is detrimental to your son’s baseball skill development and the longevity of his baseball interest. The WF Baseball goal is to have every player have fun and be successful at playing the game of baseball.
Once tryouts are complete, teams will be selected, and notification of results will be within 1-3 days after the try out.
WF Baseball reserves the right to limit or expand the number of travel teams per age based on the number of players trying out, player talent and coaching resources available.
